Shichahai Scenic Area
Shichahai is a beautiful lake district surrounded by traditional hutongs and courtyard homes. It’s one of the best-preserved historical areas in Beijing. The famed opera master Mei Lanfang spent his final years here. Nicknamed the “Venice of the North,” it’s been named one of the top 24 must-visit places in Asia by European travel media.
Temple of Heaven (Tiantan Park)
Built in 1420, the Temple of Heaven was where emperors prayed for good harvests. The park is famous for its harmonious layout, unique acoustics, and symbolic architecture, including the Circular Mound Altar, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
Bird’s Nest (National Stadium)
The Bird’s Nest, officially the National Stadium, was the centerpiece of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Its striking “nest-like” steel design has become a modern architectural icon, symbolizing China’s blend of tradition and innovation on the world stage.
Prince Gong’s Mansion (Gong Wang Fu)
This lavish Qing dynasty mansion once belonged to high-ranking officials and Prince Gong. Often called “half the history of the Qing Dynasty in one residence,” it features elegant courtyards, gardens, and intricate architecture. It's also believed to have inspired the aristocratic settings in Dream of the Red Chamber, one of China's literary classics.
Summer Palace (Yiheyuan)
China’s best-preserved imperial garden, the Summer Palace blends natural beauty with royal architecture. Modeled after Hangzhou’s West Lake, it features scenic spots like the Long Corridor, Marble Boat, Seventeen-Arch Bridge, and Suzhou Market Street. It’s often called a living museum of classical Chinese landscaping.
Qianmen Street
Qianmen Street is one of Beijing’s oldest and most famous shopping avenues, located just south of Tiananmen Square. Historically used by emperors on their way to the Temple of Heaven, it’s now a vibrant pedestrian street lined with time-honored shops, local snacks, and traditional tramcars.
Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army, one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries, is part of the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. Dating back over 2,000 years, this massive underground army consists of thousands of life-sized warriors, horses, and chariots, each uniquely crafted. The site includes three main pits and a museum, providing an incredible glimpse into the military power and craftsmanship of ancient China.
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
A symbol of Xi’an, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is a Buddhist landmark built in the Tang Dynasty to house sacred scriptures brought from India by the monk Xuanzang. The pagoda stands within the Da Ci'en Temple complex and is an architectural masterpiece reflecting ancient Buddhist culture. In the evening, visitors can enjoy a spectacular music fountain show in the surrounding square.
Huaqing Pool
Located at the foot of Mount Li, Huaqing Pool is famous for its hot springs and imperial gardens. It served as a royal retreat for emperors throughout history, most notably as the love retreat of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei during the Tang Dynasty. Visitors can explore ancient bath relics, traditional Chinese architecture, and even enjoy the grand historical performance The Song of Everlasting Sorrow.
Bell and Drum Towers
Standing in the heart of Xi’an, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower are two of the city’s most iconic historical landmarks. The Bell Tower, originally used to announce time during the Ming Dynasty, offers panoramic views of the city. The nearby Drum Tower features a collection of ancient drums and hosts live drumming performances, providing a glimpse into traditional Chinese timekeeping methods.
Muslim Quarter
A vibrant cultural and culinary hotspot, the Muslim Quarter is home to Xi’an’s Hui Muslim community. The area is filled with bustling markets, traditional shops, and street food stalls offering delicious local specialties such as lamb skewers, roujiamo (Chinese-style burgers), and biangbiang noodles. It’s the perfect place to experience the city’s unique blend of Chinese and Islamic influences.
