Ice and Snow Tour: Enter Shushan Queen Mountain Siguniang Mountain

The Landscape: A Geological Wonder

Siguniang Mountain is a famous mountain scenic spot in China. It is famous for its majestic and upright mountains. The mountain is steep and reaches the blue sky. It is covered with ice and snow and never melts all year round. It is known as the "Oriental Holy Mountain and Outdoor Paradise". It is a famous mountain scenic spot in China. It is a world natural heritage giant panda habitat, a national 5A-level tourist attraction, a national scenic spot, a national nature reserve, a national geological park, and a world-class golden signboard. The scenic spot is located in Xiaojin County in the northwest of Sichuan Province, on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Siguniang Mountain is located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the first step of China. It is the second-highest peak in Sichuan after Gongga Mountain, which is known as the "King of Shu Mountains". It is called the Eastern Alps, but I prefer its other two titles: the Queen of Shu Mountains and the Holy Mountain of the East.

Siguniang Mountain refers to the entire scenic area and the four independent snow peaks. Among them, Siguniang Peak, with an altitude of 6,250 meters, is the second-highest peak in Sichuan and is known as the "Queen of Shu Mountains". Gongga Mountain, which is 7,556 meters above sea level and known as the "King of Shu Mountains, " constitutes the King's Peak in Sichuan. In addition to the four snow-capped peaks, there are countless magnificent landscapes in the scenic area: the Sun and Moon Mirror that can reflect the face of a girl, the Five-Colored Mountain with colorful ribbons, the Ginseng Fruit Terrace with hundreds of acres of grassland, the Longzhucuo where the sea buckthorn trees die but never fall, the crystal clear Sigulacuo, the Potala Peak that looks like the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, the Jingang Mountain covered with snow and shaped like an ox's heart, and the Guozhuangping where Tibetan villagers hold a pilgrimage meeting...

Mt. Siguniang integrates sightseeing, leisure, scientific research, mountaineering, and special tourism. It is only 175 kilometers away from Chengdu and is the closest snow-capped mountain complex scenic area to the central city. The scenic area is equipped with a stop-and-go tour bus, and tourists can choose to visit according to their interests. From the rising sun to the setting sun, it can be said that there is a scene at every step. Mt. Siguniang is like a real fairy, constantly changing her beautiful face, and blending all her joys, sorrows, anger, and happiness into the mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas.

Siguniang Mountain is very large. The core scenic area alone includes three valleys and four peaks. The three valleys are: Shuangqiao Valley, Changping Valley, and Haizi Valley; and the four peaks are: Yaomei Peak, Sanguniang Mountain, Erguniang Mountain, and Daguniang Mountain. Our itinerary is said to be one day, but half a day was removed due to the rush, so in fact there was only half a day, so we only visited the most representative Shuangqiao Valley.

Although Shuangqiao Valley is only one of the three valleys, it is the most developed, the most abundant scenery, and the most suitable for mass tourism (no need to climb mountains on the plateau). It is no exaggeration to say that it is the most essential part of Siguniang Mountain. We took a bus from the entrance of the scenic area to enter the scenic area and walked along the snow-covered mountains to the deepest redwood forest in the scenic area.

The redwood forest is the end of the scenic bus and the starting point of our tour. There are towering snow-capped mountains in the background and a large area of primitive redwood forests at the foot of the mountain. You can take many wonderful photos here. Then, we went down all the way to enjoy the majesty of Potala Peak, the tranquility of Sigunacuo, the clarity of Longzhucuo... Every place makes people reluctant to leave.

Among the many scenic spots in Shuangqiaogou, I think that the most amazing one is Zhuganacuo. This is a point often overlooked by tourists. Even the scenic bus has no station here, but here along the lakeside plank road, you can see the towering snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake not far away. The snow-capped mountains and the lake complement each other, as if the two purest colors between heaven and earth blend at this moment, forming an incomparable beautiful picture. Everyone took so many photos here that they didn't want to leave, so when they walked out of it, they just caught the last bus to the scenic spot.

My Experience

When I visited Bipenggou yesterday, it was too late, which was a pity. Today, I visited Siguniang Mountain again. Although I was reluctant to leave, it also made me understand that "Ice and snow tourism in western Sichuan" is not just a slogan, but there are many ice and snow scenes in western Sichuan that are worth visiting and exploring. Although we have not yet experienced ice and snow projects such as skiing, this is not a scarce resource in western Sichuan. As long as you want, there are ski resorts and other ice and snow projects to experience in many places.

Although it is difficult to have fun in Siguniang Mountain, our ice and snow tourism in western Sichuan is still going on. Tomorrow we will go from Aba to Ganzi to appreciate the charm of the main peak of the Great Snow Mountain - Yala Snow Mountain, and see what kind of adventures we will have there. Stay tuned.

Seasons of Siguniang: Nature's Spectacular Show

Spring: Awakening of the Mountain (March - May)

As winter's white blanket slowly retreats, Siguniang Mountain comes alive with a burst of color and energy. The mountain slopes transform into a canvas of soft green, with alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. Rhododendrons bloom in vibrant pinks and purples, creating a stunning contrast against the snow-capped peaks.

Spring temperatures range from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), making it comfortable for hiking and photography. The melting snow creates numerous waterfalls and streams, and you might catch glimpses of local wildlife emerging from their winter hibernation. Herds of Tibetan sheep graze on the lower slopes, and if you're lucky, you might even spot a rare red panda.

Summer: Alpine Paradise (June - August)

Summer in Siguniang is nothing short of spectacular. The entire mountain range turns into a lush green paradise, with wildflower meadows that look like they've been painted by an artist's hand. Temperatures hover between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), creating perfect conditions for trekking and outdoor adventures.

This is the peak season for hiking, with trails becoming more accessible and the famous Changping Valley and Haizi Valley offering incredible trekking opportunities. The summer months are ideal for photography, with clear skies and dramatic landscapes. Local Tibetan and Qiang communities are more active during this time, and you might encounter traditional festivals and cultural events.

Autumn: A Symphony of Colors (September - November)

If I had to choose a favorite season in Siguniang, it would be autumn. The mountain transforms into a breathtaking palette of gold, orange, and deep red. The alpine forests become a carpet of warm colors, with maple and birch trees creating a stunning contrast against the rocky mountain peaks.

Temperatures cool down to around 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), making it perfect for photography and more serious trekking. The crisp mountain air, the sound of leaves crunching under your boots, and the incredible scenery make autumn an unforgettable experience. Wildlife becomes more active as animals prepare for the coming winter, adding another layer of excitement to your mountain adventure.

Winter: A Frozen Wonderland (December - February)

Winter turns Siguniang Mountain into a magical, snow-covered landscape that looks like it's been lifted straight from a fairy tale. Temperatures can drop to -10°C to 5°C (14°F to 41°F), creating a challenging but incredibly beautiful environment.

This is the season for serious mountaineers and winter sports enthusiasts. The snow-covered peaks offer incredible climbing opportunities, though these require professional equipment and experienced guides. The surrounding valleys become silent and serene, covered in a pristine white blanket that seems to stretch endlessly.
