Chengdu People's Park
Chengdu People's Park is located at No. 12, Shaocheng Road, Citang Street, Chengdu City, covering an area of 112,639 square meters. It is the largest open landscape historical park in the center of the bustling city.
Natural resources
Plant resources As of 2012, the park has many famous ancient trees, including ginkgo, black shell nanmu, hackberry, etc., and more than 70 other trees.
Jinshui Creek is located at the lotus pond at the foot of the west hill of People's Park. It passes through the main gate and the inner side of the east gate. It is 355 meters long and 6 meters wide. It was transformed from the original Jinhe River. Construction began in 1999 and was completed in August 2000. The riverbed is paved with smooth pebbles, and the creekside is built with large pebbles of various sizes. The main section is a gentle slope of pebbles entering the water, and there are pebble revetments. Peach trees, willow trees, banyan trees, weeping crabapples, wintersweets, small-leaf privets, golden-leaf privets, red-leaf barberry, and other plants are planted along the coast.
The Jinshui River flows through the park for about 500 meters, with two bridges on it. In 1919, a canal was dug at the current main gate (then the side gate) on the left south bank to divert the Jinshui River water into the park, around the Heming Tea House, through the Lotus Pavilion (now the Golden Fish Pond), and flow east to merge at Banbian Bridge. In 1924, the Jinshui River water was diverted from Xiaonan Street, passing through the Children's Park, the Lotus Pond, the Zoo, and the East Rockery, and then turned north to merge at Banbian Bridge.
Xinhai Revolution Road Protection Movement Square
Xinhai Square is located in the Xinhai Road Protection Memorial Square in the center of People's Park, with an area of 3,000 square meters, a building of 110 square meters, and a stage of 130 square meters. The Metropolitan (Chengdu) Entertainment Co., Ltd., originally owned by Hong Kong Jinsheng Company, demolished the open-air dance hall in 1993 and built the Metropolitan Entertainment Plaza. Because it was not in harmony with the surrounding environment, it was purchased by the government in 2004. The Xinhai Square was newly built to commemorate the Xinhai Sichuan Road Protection Movement. The project started in February 2004 and was completed and opened on May 1, 2004. To the needs of the park environment, Xinhai Square has produced ground reliefs and bas-reliefs on the stele reflecting the "History of the Revolutionary Struggle for the Protection of the Railway in Sichuan during the Xinhai Revolution".
Goldfish Island, Yongju Tea House
Goldfish Island is located between the Heming Tea House and the artificial rockery waterfall in the East District, in the artificial lake, and is connected to the Heming Tea House via an arch bridge. In 2004, the park developed and utilized Goldfish Island, restored the historical old tea house "Yongju", combined the characteristics of tea tasting in the old tea house with the ornamental fish of Goldfish Island, and built it into a cultural place for citizens to relax, enjoy the cool air, entertain, watch fish, fish, view the scenery, and taste tea, recreating the landscape of Goldfish Island. There are more than 10 varieties of ornamental goldfish and precious goldfish on the island, with hundreds of tails.
The early history of Yongju Tea House was close to the famous Tiaohuayuan Restaurant (near the current "Ziwei Pavilion"). The semi-colonial and semi-feudal society can be said to be a semi-open and semi-closed society in terms of social atmosphere.
New East Gate Rockery Square
In 2002, the municipal government renovated the old city planning of Chengdu. In 2004, the Chengdu Library and the old city houses of Banbianqiao Street near the East Gate of the People's Park were demolished and relocated, covering nearly 5,000 square meters, and returned to the management of the People's Park as green space. The green area of the park has been expanded again.
The newly built Landscape Waterfall Square and East Gate are located on the inner side of the East District of the People's Park on Ancestral Hall Street, adjacent to Banbianqiao Street, with an area of 10,600 square meters, including 9,000 square meters of green space and 1,600 square meters of square. The entire renovation project started in March 2004 and was completed and opened in December 2004. The waterfall is 43 meters wide and 12 meters high, with about 3,000 tons of stone, and is a large artificial rockery landscape.
Orchid Garden
After the founding of New China, in 1963, Chairman Zhu De presented 5 varieties of orchids from Fujian, Zhejiang, and other places, 10 pots, to the park. So far, the park has 18 varieties of orchids and more than 1,200 pots. From 1965 to 1974, 14 precious varieties in the province were purchased year by year, managed by flower worker Chen Songru, and no losses were incurred.
In 1986, the orchid garden was built on the left side of the office, covering an area of 880 square meters. The front is a gray wall with a leaky window with orchids and bamboo pictures on the wall. After entering the round arch, there is a cement imitation tree-shaped square pavilion surrounded by a pool under the pavilion. To the west and south of the pavilion are orchid racks, with 28 varieties such as Clivia and Chlorophytum, and more than 900 pots of orchids. This orchid garden is the largest orchid landscape garden in the urban parks of Chengdu.
Bonsai Garden
The bonsai garden of People's Park is located in Shaocheng Garden in the south of the central part of the park, covering an area of 2,600 square meters. It has a rest corridor and a lotus pond. The bank of the pond is piled with rockery, equipped with Ophiopogon japonicus and Rhododendron, and aquatic plants such as water lilies, lotus, calla lilies, umbrella grass, and calamus are planted in the pond. The park is lush with trees, bamboo swaying in the air, and green shade all over the ground, with a quiet environment. There are more than 200 bonsai pots on display all year round, including more than 20 landscape bonsai pots and more than 180 tree stump bonsai pots, mainly ancient trees and stumps such as elm, ginkgo, Podocarpus, Bignonia, Golden Ball, and Iron Stem Begonia.
The Podocarpus ancient stump bonsai in the park has won the special prize of the Chinese Bonsai Evaluation Exhibition and is a treasure of Chengdu People's Park.
East Rockery
The East Rockery was built in the second year of the Republic of China (the park was built in 1918). At that time, the soil from the canal was piled up, and a thatched pavilion and a wooden bridge were built, and then they were continuously decorated. During the first phase of the civil air defense project in 1965, the river under the Rockery was changed into an air-raid shelter, and the plum forest, magnolia forest, cherry forest, peach, and plum forest, and Mingyue Bridge in front of the Rockery were all changed into artificial lakes. The soil dug from the lake continued to pile up the mountain, and Li Zhongyu was responsible for piling up the rockery stones on the front.
When Binjiang Park was built in 1978, the accumulated waste soil was transported to continue the mountain, and the mountain road was tidied. This took more than a month, and the greening engineering team bore the cost. So far, the entire East Rockery is 130 meters long, 48 meters wide, and 30 meters high.
Artificial Lake
During the first phase of civil air defense in 1965, the plum, magnolia, cherry, peach, and plum forests were canceled and excavated into an artificial lake. The whole lake is slightly gourd-shaped, with an area of about 20 acres. The quaint, elegant Goldfish Island and Yongju Old Tea House are in the lake. Willows, hibiscus, weeping crabapples, peach blossoms, etc. are planted along the coast.
The East Rockery and the artificial lake are also places for Chengdu citizens to relax and escape the summer heat, row boats and entertain, and enjoy the city's scenery during holidays.
West Rockery
The West Rockery was originally a large flower garden and fountain. In 1971, during the second phase of civil air defense, this place was built into an underground hospital, and waste soil was piled on the surface. When the East-West Trunk Road was expanded in 1982, the Municipal Construction Committee allocated special funds to build corridors, buildings, pavilions, fountains, and winding mountain trails on the mountain. Rocks containing mica were piled up to form an artificial stone forest, and plum blossoms, peach blossoms, red-leaf plums, crabapples, podocarpus, bamboo, camphor trees, etc. were planted.
Zhenliu Tea Garden
"Zhenliu Tea Garden" is one of the old tea gardens in People's Park that is as famous as Heming Tea House. Zhenliu Tea House was founded in the early years of the Republic of China. Its original site was the crabapple garden west of the inner creek bridge at the gate of People's Park. Zhenliu Tea House covers an area of about 300 square meters, including a usable area of 500 square meters including the building.
The tea house is now located on the West Hill of People's Park, integrated with the green scenery of the West Hill and the small peach blossom forest. Before liberation, it was mostly a gathering place for scholars and students. It was restored and rebuilt in January 2003 and completed and opened in May 2003. Therefore, Zhenliu Tea Garden is located on the rockery on the west side of the Xinhai Railway Protection Memorial in the park, covering an area of 3,120 square meters and a building area of 267 square meters. The tea garden is lush with trees, gurgling springs, birds singing, and flowers blooming, the environment is quiet, rocks are towering, and pavilions are stacked. It has both heavy historical characteristics and is a leisure resort in the downtown area. The famous writer Mr. Wei Minglun personally wrote the plaque "Zhenliu Tea Garden" for the tea garden.
Zhenliu Tea Garden is a multifunctional modern urban ecological old tea garden that integrates tea art, Chinese food, snacks, chess, and card leisure.
